October 2018 Chapter MeetingSpeaker: Sara Newell, Sr. Vice President of Community Impact at United Way of Central Alabama United Way has a rich history in helping neighborhoods and communities in Central Alabama. The United Way of Central Alabama, Inc. (formerly The Birmingham Community Chest) was organized in 1923 with 31 agencies and a goal of $450,000. Today, with an annual fundraising goal of more than $38 million, United Way improves lives by launching and supporting the Bold Goals Coalition of Central Alabama—a large scale community-based initiative to align efforts aimed addressing disparities in education, health and financial stability (www.boldgoals.org). Throughout its history, the United Way has not changed its basic purpose-to increase the organized capacity of people to care for one another and to improve their communities.
