Project management practitioners often make the case to business executives that Project Management Offices (PMOs) can play a central role in supporting the organization in its quest to successfully implement strategy and deliver enterprise transformation. This promise has been met with mixed results due in great part to the complexity of launching the PMO, which in itself is a high risk project. The confusion over purpose, process, structure, or even terminology, stems from the lack of agreement as to what the PMO is and what benefits it is intended to achieve. The initial stages of PMO setup are critical and when practitioners focus too much on the philosophical aspects of the task at hand, executives grow impatient and the organization becomes frustrated by the lack of progress. With these high stakes PMO leaders must create a pragmatic approach that allows them to quickly ramp up capabilities and deliver value to the organization as early as possible.
The RapidStartPMO approach advocates the establishment of two simultaneous work streams, one for building and the other for operating the PMO. Through a 12-week journey, PMO leaders can implement a fit for purpose PMO that can grow based on the needs of the organization. By adopting a “building block” mentality, PMO leaders can enable the PMO to become operational as quickly as possible through a scalable design. The ultimate intent is a pragmatic model as opposed to an “all or nothing” paradigm. This presentation will provide an overview of the RapidStartPMO concept along with real life examples from the field.

Philip has developed unique insight in the area of strategy formulation and execution based on leveraging digital capabilities along with change management to achieve enterprise objectives. Philip travelled to more than 30 countries in North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia speaking and presenting on a variety of topics. Philip served two terms on a global non-profit board of directors where he interacted with thousands of practitioners and established a solid understanding of the nuanced approach of strategy execution in the field. Philip is a compelling speaker and published author who is able to energize audiences large and small while using real-life examples on leadership and transformation from his career with organizations such as Injazat, Booz Allen, IBM, and BlueCross BlueShield. Philip holds an MBA in International Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management and a BS in Business Administration from Birmingham-Southern College. He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and a PMI Fellow.
