 United Way has a rich history in h
 elping neighborhoods and communities in Central Alabama. The United Way of
  Central Alabama\, Inc. (formerly The Birmingham Community Chest) was orga
 nized in 1923 with 31 agencies and a goal of $450\,000. Today\, with an an
 nual fundraising goal of more than $38 million\, United Way improves lives
  by launching and supporting the Bold Goals Coalition of Central Alabama
 —a large scale community-based initiative to align efforts aimed address
 ing disparities in education\, health and financial stability (www.boldgoa
 ls.org). Throughout its history\, the United Way has not changed its basic
  purpose-to increase the organized capacity of people to care for one anot
 her and to improve their communities.
